Heartland Cancer Center Walks Away with Relay for Life Award

Each year the Heartland Cancer Center (HCC) team in Great Bend organizes efforts to raise money and advance awareness for cancer for Relay for Life of Barton County, and this year those efforts have earned them the Barton County Community Engagement Award.  As the American Cancer Society’s (ACS) Relay for Life activities get into full swing this summer, teams put themselves aside to raise money for cancer awareness and research.  The physicians and staff that care for cancer patients at Heartland Cancer Center day in and day out are no exception, giving even a little more of themselves.

The Barton County Community Engagement Award is bestowed upon the Relay for Life team that most successfully brings communities together by encouraging and promoting Relay for Life activities to employees, community members, and survivors; contributing to the culture of “finding a cure for cancer”. For eight years running, Relay for Life of Barton County has recognized teams that best embody the mission of Relay for Life with this award.

Heartland Cancer Center is also actively involved in signing up survivors for RFL.  So much so that in 2016, with help from HCC, Relay for Life of Barton County was recognized with the Power of Hope Award which is given nationally by ACS to the RFL event that has the most survivors participating. The Power of Hope Award is displayed at the Cancer Center.

Last year Heartland Cancer Center raised nearly $3,000 for Relay, and is on track to surpass that amount for 2017 because of their extensive fundraising efforts.  Heartland Cancer Center will hold 12 separate fundraising events this year, including a community-wide barbeque, a cookbook featuring over 300 recipes from patients, staff, and family, and their second annual 5K run/walk race.  All events are funded and staffed by the Heartland Cancer Center Relay for Life Team.  This is the selfless dedication that the citizens of Barton County, and the region, can expect from their hometown oncology team.
